Charlotte Strauszer Welch

 
     On August 30, 1916 Charlotte Strauszer was listed as one of the people who attended a meeting on August 30, 1916 laying the ground work for the forming a Red Cross Chapter.  At that time, they called it The Peru Chapter of the American Red Cross.   The name was changed the following January to The Miami County American Red Cross Chapter.  Charlotte was born in Missouri on March 14, 1892.  She was the daughter of a Swiss immigrant who was employed as a U.S. Marshall.  Her mother was born in Missouri.  She had two sisters and a brother.  She remained in Missouri through 1909 but appears in Miami County, Indiana on June 20, 1917 when she married Louis Burn Welch.  Known as Berne, her husband was a civil engineer and a surveyor.  Charlotte was executive secretary of the Miami County Tuberculosis Association, and in July of 1917 became the first woman to be named to the board of health in Miami County in its history.   She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority and the Peru First Presbyterian Church.  Charlotte had two sons.  While the couple were living in Peru in 1940, they eventually left the area.   Charlotte passed away on November 30, 1973 in Des Moines Iowa.  She was buried in Okeechobee, Florida.
