Dr. George Van Mater

On January 30, 1917, Dr. George Van Mater was elected to the Board of Directors of the First Miami County Red Cross Chapter.  He was an ear, nose and throat doctor who had moved to Peru from Brooklyn, New York in 1912.   George was unable to remain active on the board because he served as a major in the Army Medical Corps during WWI.  It must have been a difficult service for him because, since he was born June 9, 1863, he would have been in his mid-fifties during WWI.   He was 5 feet five and a half inches tall with brown eyes and brown hair and was born in New York.  His family had been in New York for generations and his father was a tailor.  On June 21, 1900 George married Lillie Blinn.  They had a family of two daughters and two sons. George was a member of the Miami County Medical Association, the Indiana Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and he was a charter member of the local American Legion post.  He retired from his practice in 1940.  On August 29, 1945, George died at Dukes Hospital.  He was cremated and interred at the Peru Mausoleum.
