Dr Harry Nyce

Dr. Harry Nyce

Harry Nyce was born in 1863 in Greensburg, Indiana.  By the time he was eight years old, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where his father worked as a fruit scaler.  Harry attended Oberlin College in Ohio and then went on to study in Heidelberg and Berlin, Germany.  While Harry was a student at German Universities he married Rosa Von Holst.  She was born in Russia but emigrated from Germany to the United States when Harry finished his education.  They had a church in Kingston, Indiana for one year before moving to Peru.  Harry preached his first sermon in Peru when the Presbyterian Church was located where the Roxy Theater was later built.  This location was across the street from the county courthouse and a half block from the smaller Wallace Theatre.  He lived his adult life with his wife, daughter and three sons in Peru.  On August 30, 1916, Harry was among the original eight people who gathered to plan Miami County Indiana’s first chapter of the American Red Cross.  Dr. Nyce was pastor at the Presbyterian Church in Peru for 40 years.  At the time of his death, he had served the congregation for the longest duration of any pastor in the state of Indiana.   He was dean of the local clergymen in Peru and dean of Presbyterian Ministers in Indiana.  On October 19, 1935, Harry died at his home from Kidney disease.  He was 72 and had been ill one week.  The community lost an icon who had served his flock for many years.   Dr. Harry Nice is buried at Kingston, Indiana.
