Harvey
Loy was born on 29 Jan. 1891 the fourth child of Samuel and Josephine
(Sater) Loy. He is listed as born in Converse, Miami County, Indiana
and also in Howard County, Indiana. The family moved back and forth
between the counties at various times. He grew up working as a farm
hand. He was called to serve in WWI and served his nation well.
Following the war he became acquainted with Hazel Vandegrift of Wabash
County and they were married on 26 June 1919 in Miami County, Indiana.
They became the parents of three sons, Robert, Frederick, and Paul
Dean. Fred served with distinction in WWII. According to different
Census records he worked in a basket factory in Converse, Miami County,
Indiana, in a factory at Lagro, Wabash County, Indiana then as a farmer
in Wabash County. He also was an auto mechanic and was an Auto Tire
Dealer. I knew him as a kind and gentle elderly man. He loved to go
fishing and on the side of the barn at their place in Lincolnville,
Wabash County he tacked up the heads of fish which to this boy was a
strange sight of the skeletal remains of fish heads. I never remember
any talk of the war by him or any family member. Perhaps some things
were better off not talked about. When we visited he was always smiling
and enjoyed the visits. We children didn't bother him at all as he had
several grandchildren living nearby so was used to all the noise we
made. As a boy I could never have imagined all the things he must have
seen in WWI not could I have imagined that mild person serving in a war.
