LeRoy Clear WWI veteran Roy Clear was born Nov. 19, 1896, at Roann to Charles and Luella Butcher Clear, and lived most of his life in Fulton and Miami counties. He served in the US Army. He married Gladys Brugh in 1921. Roy was employed early in his life by the Nickle Plate Railroad, hiring out in Peru, IN. He worked as a brakeman and union representative in Peru until 1947. Because of his stature, Roy was known on the railway as "Jumbo". He is easy to identify in any railroad photograph, of which there are many. He went on to hold positions on the NPRR of trainmaster, assistant superintendent, and superintendent, working from Frankfort IN and Muncie IN. He retired from the railroad around 1965. He and his wife, Gladys then lived at Lake Manitou, returning to Peru IN in 1971, residing at Miami's Fort mobile homes. Roy was a member of Masonic lodge 79, Rochester, the Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne, the American Legion, Peru, the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, and the Christian church. In addition to his duties as railroad superintendent he was on the Railroad Community Committee for Indiana, representing the Nickle Plate Railroad. This committee donated a bell from a steam engine to the local Boy Scout camp (Camp Red Wing, Delaware Co.) and a caboose to the Boy's Club. Deserving members of the BSA could earn a Railroad Merit badge for service associated with this steam engine bell. He also aided Peru IN with the addition of the engine that at one time was in West City Park, Peru IN. He would be very proud of Peru IN today for preserving the Peru monument and this honorable presentation of remembrance. He was uncle to Betty Fountain Copeland (William Stanley) Peru IN and great uncle to William M Copeland, Lynne A Copeland, Suzy Copeland Dresser. (all Peru High School graduates) He was thrilled at the arrival of his great great nephew, Michael Milton who visited him often at Miami's Fort in 1976 and 1977.
