Linus McCowan Bailey was born 6 Sep 1894 in Peru. He registered for the draft 5 Jun 1917 there, he was working as a draftsman for Edward Valve and Manufacturing Company of Chicago. He claimed an exemption noting that his company was involved in making munitions and naval supplies. That document described Linus and being of medium height and slender build with gray eyes and brown eyes. A more detailed description appeared on his World War II registration with a height of 5’7”, weight of 150, blue eyes, brown hair and dark complexion. He enlisted 30 Nov 1917. Bailey, a first lieutenant of ordnance, had a first class birth on the steamer Northern Pacific when it departed from Hoboken, New Jersey, 19 Jun 1918 for Brest, France. He returned aboard the USS Harrisburg that departed Brest 5 Feb 1919. He was discharged 16 Mar 1920. Following the war, he moved to Tulare, California, and became a fruit grower, then on to Fresno where he worked for the local irrigation district. He died there 13 Aug 1987 and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Fresno, California.
